Squatting is now a Criminal Offence

The old legislative framework provided two ways for people to obtain relief from squatters:

1. Squatter possession proceedings in the local county court

2. Arrest by Police

On 1 September 2012, new legislation provided that squatting in a residential building is a criminal offence with penalties of up to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of £5,000.
